How Rehab Medical’s ATP Prep Program is Advancing Employees and Improving Patient Care

Updated: Feb 28

At Rehab Medical, we are committed to advancing the careers of our employees while ensuring that our patients receive the highest level of care. One of the most significant ways we do this is through the ATP Prep program. This program is designed to equip our employees with the skills and knowledge to make a real impact.

What is the ATP Prep program?

The ATP Prep program is a training program tailored to meet the unique needs of Rehab Medical. Developed by industry experts like Rusty Mattingly, who has been with Rehab Medical since 2017, the program offers a structured pathway for employees to gain clinical understanding to prepare for the RESNA ATP certification examination.

Certified occupational therapist and ATP Rusty Mattingly played a pivotal role in creating this program. His experience establishing seating clinics and providing timely solutions to patients emphasize the importance of this certification program. The program, which is unique to Rehab Medical, was initially beta-tested in Kentucky and has since expanded nationwide, benefiting rural communities where access to specialized care is minimal.

The ATP Prep program is divided into key components:

  • Self-Study and Virtual Training: The program is designed to be completed over three months, featuring a combination of self-study and virtual training sessions. These sessions are scheduled to accommodate committed learners, with early morning forums that Rusty leads twice weekly.

  • Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must meet specific educational and experience criteria to be eligible for the ATP Certification. For example, those with a high school diploma or GED need 6,000 hours of patient contact, while those with a bachelor's degree require two years of patient experience. Continuing education units (CEUs) are also vital to the program, with recommended courses available through accredited providers like VGM.

Certified ATPs at Rehab Medical are instrumental in delivering complex rehab technology to patients who need it most. They also have the potential to increase their earning power significantly. The first ten employees from the operations side who obtain their ATP certification are eligible for a special $10,000 bonus, thanks to a $100,000 pledge from our leadership.

The first Boot Camp class was completed in December 2024, and those employees plan to schedule their exams in the early months of this year. James Lampson is the first from the Fall 2024 cohort to pass his ATP exam. Melissa LeMay, Graham Broome, and Laura Steele are other employees who previously received exam preparation support from Rusty and successfully passed the ATP certification exam.

Great news! You don’t have to wait to take advantage of our Tuition Reimbursement Program when working toward your Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) certification.
