Rehab Medical welcomed Michael Farrell to the team last month as the vice president of regulatory and funding. Michael brings nearly two decades of experience in the healthcare industry - working as a compliance consultant for various providers, then serving as the vice president of revenue cycle management for United Health Care (UHC) and Optum.
After we made the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in America list for the third time, opened four new offices, launched a new website, and was named HME Provider of the Year by HME News this year, we needed to bring in someone like Michael to help us sustain our continuous growth.
“I’ve been in the healthcare industry 15 years, providing operational guidance so facilities could build solid teams and implement processes that improved their efficiencies,” said Rehab Medical Vice President of Regulatory and Funding Michael Farrell. “With my transition to Rehab Medical, I’m not only able to provide operational guidance but I’m also able to be part of the implementation process and that excites me the most about my role.”
Prior to Michael beginning his healthcare career, he was a professional ice hockey defenseman player! For five years, he played for the Washington Capitals before he was traded to the Nashville Predators in 2003. He played for the Predators for a year where he was able to face off against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Between the two professional teams, he played 13 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2001 until he retired in 2004.
Michael’s primary responsibility will be to create processes and procedures that align with our insurance carrier policies. He will work alongside the compliance team to ensure we are adhering to Medicaid and Medicare compliance regulations. He will also work with the payer relations team to prevent excessive audits, reduce insurance denials, and expedite claim submissions.
“I’ve had the honor of serving under many great leaders from my time in the military, up to my time here at Rehab Medical. Most of which who have published great leadership books that I keep in my office to this day,” said Rehab Medical Vice President of Compliance Michael Jackson.
“My career journey has exposed me to various types of leadership styles, and Michael has already shown how he models many of the great leaders I’ve had the privilege of serving under. I am confident that his attitude and leadership approach will help us continue driving success.”
By having Michael oversee the entire compliance and insurance process, we can close out any gaps that could result in our patients being denied the life improving mobility equipment they need. Additionally, he has a unique leadership philosophy where he believes attitude and activity are the keys to a successful career.
“If you have a good attitude and can maintain high activity then everything else will fall into place,” mentioned Farrell.
During Michael’s onboarding process, he will focus on understanding the needs of his team and establishing strong relationships with our most challenging insurance carriers. This means he will target areas where we have what he refers to as, “Aging AR (i.e. outstanding accounts receivable claims)” to understand where in the process bottlenecks are happening that prevent insurance payouts. From there Michael plans to foster a culture of continuous improvement where his team strives for excellence and can be part of solutions for anyone in the company.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the Rehab Medical team,” concluded Farrell. “They’ve shown some impressive growth over the last several years. For the company to continue this growth, they needed someone like me to help with building and strengthening relationships with payer sources while keeping in line with healthcare regulations.”
As we continue developing our organizational structure centered around improving lives, we are positive Michael will play a key role in how we grow in 2025 and beyond.
